Joe Meyer was re-elected Wyoming’s 30th State Treasurer in November of 2010. Joe was originally elected State Treasurer in Nocember of 2006.
Born and raised in Casper, Meyer is the grandson of a rancher and railroad engineer and son of a Casper businessman and businesswoman. He was an all-state high school football player and member of all-state band and orchestra. Joe was the first in his family to go to and graduate from college, graduating from the University of Wyoming first with a degree in mathematics and chemistry. He went on to receive his JD from the UW School of Law. He met and married Sheridan native Mary Orr Meyer during his second year of law school. They have been married for 43 years and have two sons and two grandsons. Joe and Mary and their two sons and daughter-in-law, Vince, Warren and Cory, are all proud UW alumni.
After law school, Joe and Mary moved to Fremont County where he was a prosecuting attorney. He later worked in Lander as a practicing attorney at the Smith and Meyer law firm. In 1971, Joe helped form the Legislative Service Office and served as the Deputy Director. He was later appointed by Governor Mike Sullivan to be Wyoming Attorney General and holds the distinction of being the longest serving AG in the state’s history. Following his tenure as Attorney General, Joe later returned to the University of Wyoming as an Officer for two University presidents before completing two terms as Secretary of State.
Joe also serves as a current member and past-President of the Cheyenne-Laramie County Board of Health, a member of the Board of Trustees for the Longs Peak Council, Boy Scouts of America, past governing Board member of the National Association of Secretaries of State, Chairman of the Frontier Certified Development Company, past member and Chairman and senior Attorney General of the Conference of Western Attorneys General and served as President of the Western Conference of State Treasurers.
